Yet, when most people nowadays think of the movie, they remember little more than Nicole Kidman’s nose. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards and features a stacked ensemble cast of A-list performers and supporting scene stealers that few films in the 20 years since its release have managed to equal. A 2002 film based on a great work of literature that was, in turn, inspired by another great work of literature, its story spans three timelines spread across 75 years and wrestles with complex philosophical questions about death, happiness and the meaning of life. The Hours is the platonic ideal of a prestige piece. ![]()

![]() ![]() If, however, you are looking for more of a "Civil War" story, then you may be disappointed. ![]() I will likely listen to it again, which is high praise indeed from me. To summarize, I loved this book and the performance. As always, though, his work seems well researched and, although obviously fiction, is probably more reflective of reality than much of what passes for official histories. Jakes continues to be unsparing in his portraits of human nature as he tells the story of "how the west was won", and this could cause some to have a negative view of this story, especially those of a righteous bent. If, like me, you love well developed charters in a historical setting, then you will still find this book very enjoyable. This 3rd book is essentially the story of Charles Main and his life "out west". Ditto if you are looking for a lot more insight into the main characters of the first books. If, like some, you are interested in the stories from the civil war aspect, then the third will disappoint. If so, how you will find this third book depends on why you were reading the first two. ![]() I'm assuming that if you're thinking of reading book three, it means you've made it through the epic journey's that are books 1 and 2. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fixing this will be harder than any skateboarding trick. The advent of sex positive lesbian culture of the 1990s was not the first thing I expected to be thinking about when I began reading Christina Crosby’s book A Body, Undone: Living On After Great Pain. We did not stop to consider the ways accident, illness, or just time, might alter everything we took for granted then. The body, our bodies, in love and in sex, named themselves in this dance, these clothes, these moments. Queerness, in our lives back then, was an explosion of embodied joy, dancing hip to groin, our arms around each other’s necks, my exposed cleavage, her big metal belt buckle, sweat glistening on our new tattoos. In the late 20th-century American dyke world, where my longtime lover and I fell in love, our sexy, and sex-positively, gendered clothes were our rebellion, our liberation, and our becoming. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sift through historical evidence and passages from a range of theologians, thinkers, philosophers, and laypeople on the topic of Jesus as you weigh compelling expert testimony that rejects easy answers.

But this did not end her relationship with Joy Adamson: when the first litter was born, Pippa led her to her cubs. Eventually Pippa mated with a wild cheetah and lived in the bush. Joy Adamson first gained the friendship and trust of her charge then, with what Julian Huxley termed her "passionate patience and understanding love," she encouraged her to enter the wild life. Adamson decided to restore this great and graceful cat to its natural wild heritage, in spite of the fact that no domesticated cheetah had ever consented to return to the bush. In A Dirty Job, Moore, a delightfully witty, foul-mouthed and fairly insane writer, tells the story of a bunch of witty, foul-mouthed and fairly insane San Franciscoans who get caught up in the work of the Universe as Death Merchants, collecting souls from the recently dead and making sure each soul ends up into the correct new body. So, it’s bad that the Irish hellhounds - Alvin and Mohammed - have disappeared from the scene.īeyond all that, though, there was at least one reader who spent much of Secondhand Souls mourning the absence of the two 400-pound mastiffs who first made their appearance in Moore’s 2006 book A Dirty Job.
